The Pitch In a nightmarish urban future, a lovely misfit joins with a grizzled cybernetic monster in his crusade against a night army of bestial, post-human drug addicts.
The Story A few decades into the future, a downcast aesthetic has permeated mainstream culture. In the inverted values of the time, beauty is disdained and only sickliness and despair are deemed worthy emotions.
And so beautiful, nubile Doll is shunned as a misfit in her own hometown, the landlocked urban freakshow of Nether Providence. On a rare night out at a club with her girlfriend and roommate Elyssin, she encounters the creature Gristle, who's locked in furious combat with a swarm of "Hydes"--bestial scavengers who have surrendered their humanity to a fearsome drug known as "Grey Matter."
Doll's fellow club-goers trample each other in panic and then, with nowhere to run, act as jaded spectators, unmoved by Gristle's near death at the hands of the swarming Hydes. Disgusted by their detachment, Doll alone acts to help Gristle turn the tide in a bloody chase through the techno-gothic city. It is during this chase that Dolls eyes are gouged out by a Hyde.
The chase ends at Gristle's lair where we are introduced to his brother and fellow creation, Modo. There he shares the incredible story of how they were created and his motivation in the massacre of the Hydes. He also gives Doll a set of goggles, geared to work only with human physiology, that will return her sight as well as give her the ability to detect Grey Matter addicts.
Thus, she begins to serve as Gristle's second sight. And here is born a strange alliance--a pair heralded by none, yet fighting for the common good--tested by betrayals and sinister alliances, even unrequited longing. Gristle, a hideous, blank-eyed, 7-foot psychobilly Frankenstein with a unfinished cybernetic arm, will make a place in his brutish world for the delicate Doll.
